Staying Motivated when Stuck

As a competitive athlete, I've experienced my fair share of struggles with motivation. There are days when the soreness feels unbearable, when the early morning workouts seem endless, and when self-doubt clouds your confidence. But even in those tough moments, I’ve found ways to reignite my spark and keep going. If you’re struggling to stay motivated, you’re not alone and I hope this blog gives you the encouragement you need to keep chasing your dreams.

Remember Why You Started

When motivation starts to fade, I remind myself of why I fell in love with fencing in the first place. Whether it's the thrill of competition, the friendships built on teamwork, or the pride in pushing your limits, remembering your “why” can rekindle the passion you felt when you first started. I fence because I love the energy, the strategy, and precision required to score a touch. What’s your “why”? Hold onto it, and let it fuel your efforts.

Set Small, Achievable Goals

Big dreams can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when progress seems slow. That’s why I break my goals into smaller milestones. Instead of focusing on winning a NAC (North America Cup), I focus on improving one skill at a time - like perfecting my fleche or increasing my footwork speed. These small victories build momentum and make the bigger goals feel more achievable. Celebrate each success, no matter how small, and let it remind you that you’re moving forward.

Lean on Your Support System

When motivation dips, the people around you can lift you up. For me, my teammates are a constant source of encouragement. They remind me that I’m not alone in this journey and that every athlete faces challenges. Whether it’s a pep talk before a tournament or a fun team dinner, my teammates help me stay motivated even on the toughest days. Don’t be afraid to lean on your coach, family, or friends when you need a boost. They want to see you succeed just as much as you do.

Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is to stop comparing myself to others. It’s easy to feel discouraged when you see a teammate rising through the rankings seemingly effortlessly or getting higher ratings. But I’ve realized that my journey is unique, and the only person I need to compete with is myself. Celebrate your progress and recognize how far you’ve come, even if you’re not at your personal best yet. Improvement takes time, and every step forward is worth celebrating.

Find Joy in the Process

Sometimes, motivation isn’t about results. It’s about rediscovering the joy in what you’re doing. On rough days, I focus on the little moments that make me smile: the laughter during team practice, the satisfaction of an expected touch, or the adrenaline rush of competition days. Those moments remind me why I love fencing, even when it gets challenging.

Motivation isn’t always easy to find, but it’s there waiting for you in the moments of triumph, resilience, and passion. Remember, the toughest battles often lead to the greatest victories. So keep pushing, keep believing, and most importantly, keep loving what you do. You’ve got this!
